Why we practice the way we do.

Dr. Mary Green opened Lewis & Clark Veterinary Clinic with a clear idea of what good veterinary medicine looks like: every animal that comes through the door gets a complete exam, a careful eye, and a doctor who's still thinking about the case after the appointment ends. She's been practicing as a veterinarian in Yankton since 2018 and has since added certifications in acupuncture and chiropractic care because treating the whole animal sometimes requires more than one approach.

“We're not only your vet. We're also your neighbors.”

What we see. What we treat.
What we do.

01

Wellness & Preventive Care

Routine visits aren't just for shots. Every wellness appointment includes a full exam: not just the reason you came in, but looking at your pet's whole picture, head to tail.

02

Urgent & Same-Day Appointments

We see urgent care appointments during business hours, Monday through Friday. When something can't wait, call first so we can assess the situation. Sometimes that means treating your pet here, sometimes it means getting you to the right place, fast.

03

Surgery

We perform a range of surgical procedures for dogs, cats, and other small animals. Your pet is monitored closely the entire time they're under anesthesia—and that level of care continues well into recovery. Your pet goes home when they're ready, not on a schedule.

04

Diagnostics & Imaging

We run lab work, digital X-ray, and ultrasound right here in our veterinary practice. When a case calls for more, we have a group of specialists we refer to. Getting answers doesn't stop at what we can do in our building.

05

Senior Pet Care & Pain Management

Older animals hide discomfort well. We pay close attention to changes take senior pain management seriously as an important part of your pet's care plan.

06

Acupuncture & Chiropractic Care

Dr. Green holds certifications in both acupuncture and chiropractic care, offering integrative treatment options for pets whose conditions call for more than one approach.

07

End-of-Life Care

When the time comes, we make sure it's handled with the care and privacy it deserves. This isn't just another appointment—our team remembers every pet we say goodbye to: their personality, their story, their special quirks.

08

Large Animal & Farm Calls

We see large animals and make farm calls to Yankton and the surrounding counties. Call to discuss what your situation requires.

01 — How We Handle

Less
Stressful.

Your pet's visits are designed to be less stressful.

Fear Free Certified Staff

Lewis & Clark veterinarians and staff are Fear Free certified individuals. That certification reflects a specific, trained approach to how we handle animals—how we read them, approach them, and manage the environment—with the goal of making every visit as low-stress as possible for your pet and for you. We can't promise it's always easy. We can promise we're always working at it.

02 — How We Listen

Full
Attention.

Your appointment gets your doctor's full attention.

We take the time to understand your pet's full picture, not just the reason you came in today. And that attention doesn't stop at the end of the appointment; we're the kind of practice that's still thinking about your case after you've gone home.

You'll notice the details.

Our clinic is clean, our staff is prepared, and nothing about your visit should feel like an afterthought. This is the standard we hold for every patient, every day, because that's what showing up for our community actually looks like.

Frequently asked questions:

Fear Free is a certification program that trains veterinary teams in techniques designed to reduce anxiety and stress in animals during vet visits. It covers everything from how we approach and handle animals to how the exam environment is set up. At Lewis & Clark, the team is trained in these methods because a calmer pet is easier to examine well, and a less stressful visit is better for everyone in the room.

Yes! We welcome new patients and their owners and are happy to establish care for dogs, cats, exotic animals, and large animals. If you're new to the area or looking for a different veterinary experience, give us a call and we'll get you set up.

Yes. We see urgent care appointments during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. If something can't wait, call us first so we can be ready for you when you arrive. For after-hours emergencies, we offer a link to a telehealth triage service that can help you determine next steps.

If your pet is in visible distress, not eating or drinking, vomiting repeatedly, having trouble breathing, or has experienced a trauma, call us. We'd rather you call and find out it can wait than wait and find out it couldn't. Our team can help you assess over the phone.

We accept CareCredit and ScratchPay, which offer financing options for veterinary care. Payment is due at time of service for standard appointments. If you have questions about costs before your visit, call us. We're happy to give you a sense of what to expect.

Your first visit starts with a full exam: every body system, not just the reason you came in. We'll take a thorough history, ask about your pet's lifestyle, diet, and any concerns you have, and give you a clear picture of where your pet stands before you leave. Plan for enough time to actually talk, because we don't rush through appointments.

Yes. We see a range of exotic species including reptiles and small mammals. Call ahead to discuss your specific animal and we can confirm we're the right fit.

We're an independently owned animal hospital, not a corporate practice, which means the standards here are set by the people who actually see your pet. Every appointment is a full exam. Many of our staff members are Fear Free Certified. We offer urgent care during business hours so you're not driving to Sioux Falls for something we can handle here. And we've chosen to be part of this community, which means we take that responsibility personally.
